About our book

How we started
It was readily evident from early discussions that one of the most neglected areas of study for students entering the machining trade and for many of those already in the trade was the Setup of turning equipment. The knowledge and ability to bridge the gap between the CNC Program and the processing of the work piece is essential in becoming a capable machinist. This book will assist the student through the complete process of setting up a piece of turning equipment. To accomplish this we have tried to cover everything within the process that would or could affect your ability to accomplish this task successfully. We purposely stayed away from delving deeply into the “Programming” of the part. There are numerous avenues available through the colleges for those wanting to become a CNC Programmer. We do not go deeply into cutting tools and their applications. Again there are courses specific to this purpose and a great deal of information available on cutting tools. We have made an effort to give you an “appreciation” of the machine, it’s components and how they tie together. We want the student to know “why” certain things happen and “where” the answers may be found. It is possible to learn how to setup a turning operation or many operations through repetition. This may be acceptable as long as you are content to limit your knowledge to those specific machines, parts, and processes. We know from our own experience that it is much more fulfilling and rewarding to extend your interest and knowledge by truly learning the trade in full. We hope you enjoy the book and your studies in the art of setting turning equipment. The book has purposely been issued in soft cover to allow you to bring it from the class to the workshop. The size of the book is also designed to provide you ample space to add your own reference notes as you learn and grow in the trade.
Learn it! Practice it! Perfect it! Be Proud of it! Pass it on!
